Actually, in the four times I have been to see ROTK, there has been an intermission.
But then, they were small, local indie cinemas, rather than big multiplexes.
I agree with everything else you said though.

It is unusual. But my local cinema has an intermission for most long films- all the LOTR and Harry Potter films have had them.
So, it is extremely odd, but does happen.
