Butch Cassidy, The Sundance Kid, and Lawrence of Arabia

So, is everyone sick of gay cowboys yet? Of course you're not. Contrary to my icon, I'm not talking about Brokeback Mountain. Behind the cut you'll find 17 caps from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid:

Butch hugs some random guy...

...as Sundance stares jealously.

Dude. They're SHARING A HORSE.

No actual BT, but aw. The look on Butch's face...
[sorry, Photobucket's being a bitch and won't let me size this one properly.]

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sundance certainly appears to be playing with Butch's hair.

Possibly my favorite cap.

And, as a bonus, I'll throw in some (19) caps from Lawrence After Arabia: A Dangerous Man, which I just saw. It's heavy on the eyefuckary, but Lawrence is played by a very young Ralph Fiennes, which I'm sure makes up for any lack of direct touchage.

So here, Feisal is playing the knife-between-the-fingers game, at lightning speed, on Lawrence's hand. There must be a colossal amount of trust between them, as Lawrence isn't even slightly nervous.

They also have no use for personal space.

Er...okay, so I threw this in here mainly for fun; it's actually Lawrence looking in a mirror, but if any comm would appreciate this picture, it would be this one, right?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
It looks so, SO much like they're getting married here.

Holding hands (kind of)

Lawrence staring lustfully at Feisal...

...and Feisal staring lustfully back. This sort of thing made up a good 80% of the movie, seriously.

More longing looks.

Lawrence's reaction to finding a naked woman in his bed. No, seriously. She runs out of the room with him laughing hysterically.

Oooh, scars.

The last shot of the movie. NO, I SWEAR. Ohmygodtheyaresogay.

So the picture of the Butch and Sundance hair playing totally reminds me of this picture (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v366/redXcoloredXstars/Slashy/Rebel%20Without%20a%20Cause/RebelScreenTest11.jpg) (from a Rebel Without a Cause screen test) and that makes me happy. It also, subsequently, makes the picture very gay :D

It always struck me interesting that 20th Century Fox released a special edition of BC just when Brokeback started to become really huge.

I REALLY like the fonting they used for the box. No coincidence, indeed.

There was a Butch and Sundance biographer a few years back that made a fairly good case for them being gay. *G* Butch in particular had a rather strange reputation for never associating with women in a romantic way (one journalist of the time reported that "he is never seen in the company of any particular lady, but is always a perfect gentleman with them"), and Sundance's relationship with Etta Place being anything but platonic has yet to be proved. She was apparently along for the adventure, and not much else.

According to this author, when she examined old records, Butch and Sundance always shared a room in hotels and rooming houses they stayed in, and Etta would occupy a separate room.
No one knows if that that was simply to protect her reputation, but it's definitely true that throughout all their travels and when they finally bought a hacienda in South America, they always slept together, even when it wasn't necessary to save money.
A friend of theirs in South America reported in his journal that they shared a bedroom in the hacienda. Etta did not accompany them to South America, Sundance actually left her to be with Butch while she was ill and underwent an appendectomy. This has led several biographers to believe that either their romantic relationship was over at that point, or they actually never had one.

Lawrence of Arabia, aka T.E Lawrence WAS gay, actually. He had a masochistic kink, he liked to be spanked and whipped.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T._E._Lawrence

Homosexuality was so closeted at that time, it's difficult to get any clear evidence, but he never married, nor even showed the slightest romantic interest in female company, not to mention there is a strong homoerotic element in his writings.

Well, it's hard to ascertain Lawrence's exact sexual preferences, or lack thereof because that was such an era of secrecy about sexual matters in general.
But what is known that what little sexual interest he wrote about or expressed were all towards other males. How much that was acted upon is what isn't actually known.
It'd be very easy to assume someone was asexual when they simply could not express their true sexual interests without fear.
That could be true for both his masochistic tendencies or homosexuality.

I love Lawrence of Arabia - I've always considered it a gay epic. LOL. Thanks for sharing!

I love you, I love Paul Newman and Robert Redford and I especially love Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid!
I got to write about how their relationship and homosociality/homosexuality for a film class, best essay ever!

[identity profile] nonotliterally.livejournal.com 2006-07-25 04:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. Butch and Sundance are the original cowboys in love. After I'd seen the movie several times (especially as I got older and more aware of such things) I realized that the love story is most definitely between those two. They both love Etta, I think, but they're IN love which each other, and essentially married in a spiritual sense. They'll go anywhere and do anything as long as they're together.

[identity profile] lowly-concubine.livejournal.com 2006-07-25 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
LOVE the Lawrence of Arabia ones, thanks!
